This medication is used to help relieve moderate to severe pain. Hydromorphone belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid (narcotic) analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain.
Dilaudid(Hydromorphone) causes constipation by reducing gut motility because it acts on the myenteric plexus in the intestinal tract. Morphine decreases the rate of intestinal transit. Dilaudid, like other opioids, often causes hypogonadism and hormone imbalances in chronic users of both sexes.
This side effect is dose-dependent and occurs in both therapeutic and recreational users. A high dose of morphine can impair finger tapping and the ability to maintain a low constant level of isometric force.
